Condensation is a big problem that can lead to damage on your property if not seen to. It is estimated that 1 in 5 homes in the UK experience roof or loft condensation. Due to the roof or attic being a place in the home that is rarely visited, it gives any preexisting condensation, the chance to build on and cause further srtuctural damage before you even become aware of it. But what is condensation?
What is Condensation?
Condensation happnes when water vapour in the air encounters cold surfaces and is compressed from gas into a liquid. If condensation is a regular occurence in your roof space, the first step would be to make sure your loft has sufficient insulation in place.
Causes of Condensation
The main reason for condensation is when warm or hot air comes into contact with a cold surface. This tends to cause huge problems, leading to damp and mould. If not treated or looked at quickly it can also rot your timbers and structural support to your roof. There are other very common causes of condensation such as:
- Poor insulation causing cold weather finding its way into your property
- Changes between warm and cold weather
- Larger temperature drops between day and night
- Humidity within the home
- If you have no felt or membrane in place inbetween your rafters. This allows too much cold air in and is a cause of concern. Check that the roof tiles are not visible as we advise a membrance in place just to keep as much of the cold air out as possible.
It is important that once you have spotted condensation that you get it expertly seen to as build up can lead to other roof features becoming wet, causing staining and ruin to its structure.
Water vapour can pass through most buildings. As the traditional use of insulating a loft is fibre glass; condensation will cause a problem and cause the fibreglass to shrink and rot over time which can then lead to damp patches on your ceilings and a need to re-insulate which again is costly. However, condensation is also very typical in new build properties as well due to materials such as plaster being used, which has a high amount of moisture, this in turn increasing the likelihood of damp and condensation taking place.
Condensation Solutions
Condensation in roof spaces can cause problems for homeowners, including mould growth and condensate dripping from the ceiling. The best way to prevent condensation is with spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation does not allow water vapour to pass through it, so condensation will never form on its surface. Loft insulation also helps keep condensation out of your home's roof space by eliminating cold spots that lead to water vapours collecting on ceilings.
Spray foam insulation is a great way to deal with condensation. It will stop the water vapour from getting into your loft space and it also makes an airtight seal which prevents any moist, warm air entering through your ceiling where condensation can form again. It is the perfect solution for condensation in roof spaces because the chemical we use is open-cell, which is breathable and pushes condensation to the dew point, above the roof.
